What is a mentor and how will they help?

A mentor is a person with extensive business experience who will offer advice, support and guidance through the early part of your Start Up journey.

Your mentor is:

  • An independent voice that helps you evaluate options and make decisions.
  • Somebody to lean on when you feel you need somebody independent who will not judge you, but rather help you reach a solution.
  • Somebody to discuss challenges and opportunities with.
  • Somebody that can provide general guidance on any day-to-day issues you and the business find, especially those you didn’t anticipate in your plan.
  • Somebody who can help you access new connections and information.
What can't my mentor do?

A mentor will not tell you what to do or how do to do it. They cannot:

  • Provide legal, accountancy or other regulated services. However, they will likely know professionals that can assist you and be able to introduce you for an initial free meeting.
  • Become directly involved in marketing activities for your business.
  • Develop any strategy, planning or financial information you require. However, they will help you understand what you need to do, how to do it and support you in exploring the options available to you. However, all decisions taken are always the responsibility of the business owner.
  • Own or take any stake in your business – financial or otherwise.
